Bonsai overwintered or totally indoors?
1 year ago By Ginger SnapsI am wondering whether I should keep my bonsai indoors during the winter or all year. I am a beginner bonsai gardener, about to get my first tree (an azalea). I live in Zone 4, and in a place where spring and fall are myths, meaning I cannot have a bonsai tree of any kind outdoors year-round. My first solution was to leave the tree outdoors May to late September, when the average temp would stay above 40F, then bring it into my 40F basement with full spec. lighting for the winter dormant months. Unfortunately, I can't display it there. I was informed that not giving the bonsai the necessary dormant period would be bad for it, but I heard that I might just keep it upstairs and fed year-round, letting me display it for more than 6 months a year. Would this mess up its "clock"? Would it flower right, with all the flowers at one time, or would it flower sporadically, or not at all, or poorly? Would 6 month winters do that to it anyways, making it more practical to just keep it warm and fed year round? Our summers are also pretty harsh, at 100F or more, and I wonder if that might mean it needs to be indoors during the summer, anyways. I know that's quite a question, but I can't seem to get straight answers anywhere.
I know people hate the thought of indoor bonsais, but I have humidity gear, lighting gear, and air circulation gear, and otherwise I don't think I can keep one. I know they can be kept indoors, i'm just wondering if a constant active period would mess with my tree.
This question is still awaiting it's first answer. Think you're smart? Help out!

Chinese Elm or Snow Rose Bonsai?
1 year ago By ThanksI wanna buy from these two, please advise me. I'm a beginner.
I'd say Chinese Elm Bonsai.Chinese Elm are quite good plants to choose for beginners at bonsai - with a predictable growth pattern and being quite forgiving when pruned. ‘Frosty’ is a shrubby, slow-growing form with small, neatly arranged leaves bearing white teeth - a good candidate for bonsai.
Whereas Snow Rose Bonsai is more difficult.
There is a few useful website on Chinese Elms Bonsai :http://www.chinesebonsaigarden.com/chinese-elm-bonsai-tree/

And also Snow Rose Bonsai:

This will help. There is info in here.
http://www.bonsai4me.com/SpeciesGuide/Serissa.html This is the Snow Rose. There is something about the smell in there.
What kind of bonsai to grow in Las Vegas?
1 year ago By Your motherI live in Las Vegas, where it is either 110F during summer or 50F during winter and about as sunny as it is possible to be. We get clouds/rain a week or two out of the whole year.
I was wondering what kind of tree would be good to grow indoors that I could preferably keep in full sun without it getting fried. I would prefer to grow it from seed, so seeds that aren't too difficult to germinate would be a plus.
I'm a beginner, if that wasn't pretty obvious.
If it makes any difference with the ease of seed germination, I am taking a plant propagation class and I'm sure the instructor would let me use the gibberelic acid to negate any cold storage times.
Oh, and having it be an evergreen would be absolutely fantastic.
You can try here for a few ideas on that.

1 year ago By SpiderGirlI got given a wisteria bonsai growing kit as a welcome home present.

bonsai - my ilex (holly) bonsai tree leaves are withering (pics included)?
1 year ago By Darcy Cthe leaves have got all dry and have started to bend inwards and a few have started to drop off
is it because of the posistion (i place it on a windowsill which gets quite a lot of sun, as there are no buildings near there to block the sun for some of the day.
or is it due to watering... too much or too little. a few days ago i placed it in a shallow sink of water for 10 minutes...

What is a "candle" in terms of a pine sapling?
